How to choose a hair dryer (and what the specs actually mean)

Dryer marketing is full of numbers that sound technical and mean very little on their own. Here is what each one actually tells you.

Wattage: partly useful

Watts measure power consumed, not airflow produced. A poorly designed 2000W dryer can move less air than a well-designed 1400W one. Use it as a rough floor — under 1400W will feel slow — but do not treat higher as automatically better.

Airflow: the number that matters

Measured in CMM or m³/min. This is what actually dries your hair. Fast-moving air removes water without needing extreme heat, which is the whole trick. If a brand publishes airflow, that is a good sign.

Motor type: the real difference

An AC motor is heavier, louder, and lasts a long time. A digital brushless motor is lighter, quieter, spins faster and usually sits in the handle, which balances the tool in your hand. If your arm gets tired, this is the spec to care about.

Ionic: real, but oversold

Negative ions break up water droplets and reduce static. On frizz-prone or coarse hair, it makes a visible difference. On fine hair, it can make it go limp. Useful — not magic.

Heat settings: more is genuinely better

Two settings means you are choosing between too hot and not hot enough. Three heat levels plus a cool shot lets you actually match the tool to your hair, and the cool shot is what sets your style.

What to buy

  • Fine hair: lighter dryer, lower heat range, skip heavy ionic
  • Thick hair: strong airflow, concentrator nozzle, three heat settings
  • Curly hair: a proper bowl diffuser is non-negotiable
  • Travel: dual voltage and a folding handle, no exceptions
